Learn French over 50 and explore the Côte d’Azur : the Club 50 at alpha.b in August
You speak some French. You love France. And at this point in your life, you want more than a classroom — you want a real experience, with people your own age, in one of Europe’s most beautiful cities. That is exactly what the Club 50 at alpha.b is built for. Join our course to learn French over 50 at alpha.b in Nice this August: French classes, cultural outings and a group of people just like you.
Who is the Club 50 actually for?
The Club 50 is not a generic language course with a few senior discounts bolted on. It was designed from the start for adults aged 50 and over who already have some French (from level A2), who want to improve it, and who have no interest in sitting in a room full of 20-year-olds. Classes are reserved exclusively for the 50+ group. So are most of the activities. The people who join tend to share a few things: they have travelled before, they value good conversation, they are curious rather than competitive. Past groups have included retired teachers from Sweden, professionals from Germany and Switzerland, and passionate Francophiles from the UK, the US and Australia. What they all had in common was a love of France and the desire to actually use the language — not just study it. If that sounds like you, keep reading.
What does a typical day look like?
Mornings are for class. From 9:30 to 12:00, Monday to Friday, you work with a qualified teacher in a small group (6 to 10 people maximum). The lessons are tied directly to what you are doing that afternoon — so if you are visiting the Matisse Museum after lunch, the morning might focus on describing art, expressing opinions, or reading a short press article about the exhibition. Grammar is woven in, not drilled in isolation. Afternoons are a different kind of learning. Over the two weeks, the programme includes 7 guided afternoon outings, 2 evening events, a full Saturday excursion, and a farewell lunch on the last Friday. In a recent August session, participants visited Nice’s old town and its Belle Époque architecture, took a boat trip along the coast to Villefranche and Beaulieu, toured the Picasso Museum in Antibes, explored the medieval hilltop village of Èze, and attended a wine and local specialities tasting in the evening. All of it conducted in French, with a teacher or activities leader from the school.
Why Nice, and why August?
Nice has more than 300 days of sunshine a year. In August, the sea is warm and the city is alive — markets, open-air concerts, evening walks along the Promenade des Anglais. It is the kind of place where speaking French feels like a natural extension of being there, not homework. alpha.b is in the centre of the city, in a renovated Belle Époque building two minutes from the main shopping street and about ten minutes’ walk from the beach. Classrooms are air-conditioned. Wifi is free. The two buildings have a private garden — a good place to review vocabulary or simply sit in the sun between sessions. The school has been here since 1993, under the same family direction. It holds three quality labels — Qualité FLE, IALC, and Eaquals (reinspected in June 2025 with excellent results) — which puts it in a very small category of French language schools worldwide.“It’s the 11th time I am coming to alpha.b. When I started in 2007, I did not speak French at all. In the afternoon, we have excursions like Monaco, St Tropez, we also visit museums. We really spend 2 unforgettable weeks with the Club 50. After 2 weeks, they are no longer colleagues — they became friends.” — A returning Club 50 participant
