C’est le verlan du mot « femme ». Beaucoup de mots urbains sont construits selon cette forme qui consiste à inverser les syllabes du mot.

Covid 19 und Sprachreisen

Die Schule

Soziale Distanzierung wird sowohl in der Schule als auch in den Schulgärten respektiert.

Die Schüler werden gebeten, in allen Gemeinschaftsbereichen der Schule eine Gesichtsmaske zu tragen. Wichtig :
Die Schüler müssen ihre eigene Maske mit- bringen.

Hydroalkoholische Gelspender werden am Schuleingang, in allen Gemeinschaftsbe- reichen und in allen Klassenzimmern zur Verfügung gestellt.

Der Getränkeautomat ist ausser Betrieb ge- setzt. Bitte bringen Sie Ihre eigenen Getränke und Snacks mit.

Klassenzimmer und Toiletten werden zweimal täglich desinfiziert.

Eine leitende Mitarbeiterinen vor Ort hat eine spezifische covid-19 Schulung absolviert, um die Sicherheit aller zu gewährleisten.

Das Kursprogramm

Um alle Vorschriften einzuhalten, bieten wir aktuell folgende Kurse an:

  • Französisch Grundkurs (20 Lektionen pro Woche)
  • Französisch Intensivkurs (30 Lektionen pro Woche)
  • Kombinationskurs (20+5 oder 20+10 Lektionen pro Woche)
  • DELF Vorbereitungskurs (26 Lektionen pro Woche)Momentan sind keine 30+, Familienkurse, Lehrerkurse sowie Kurse für Anfänger buchbar. Unser nächstes Startdatum für Anfänger ist der 26 Oktober.

Der Unterricht und Stundenplan

Abhängig von der Grösse des Klassenzimmers werden die Klassen aus 5 bis 10 Schülern bestehen.

Da wir die soziale Distanzierung während des Unterrichts respektieren, müssen die Lehrer und die Schüler aktuell während des Unterrichts keine Maske tragen.

Kurs- und Pausenzeiten werden angepasst, um eine Mindestanzahl von Personen in den Gemeinschaftsbereichen zu gewährleisten.

Der Vormittagsunterricht beginnt zwischen 08:30 und 09:30 und die Klassen werden auf unsere zwei Gebäude («le Centre» und «le Forum») verteilt. Die Kurse enden zwischen 11:40 und 12:40.
Die Pausenzeit für den Vormittagsunterricht wird auf 10 Minuten reduziert.

Der Nachmittagsunterricht (Intensivkurs oder Einzellektionen) beginnt zwischen 13:30 und 14:30. Es werden keine Pausen stattfinden.

Der Stundenplan kann auf unserer App (Informationen wie Login und Passwort wurde Ihnen bereits zugeschickt) abgerufen werden.

Wir stellen weder Stifte und Papier noch Tablets oder Laptops zur Verfügung. Bitte bringen Sie Ihre eigenen Utensilien.

Das Freizeitprogramm

Wir bieten ein reduziertes Freizeitprogramm an.

Wir werden eine ausführliche Liste mit Akitivtätsideen, die selbständig durchgeführt werden können, bereitstellen.

Die Unterkunft

Hotels und Residenzen müssen den Richtlinien der französischen Behörden folgen, die sich von den Vorschriften unterscheiden, die wir in unserer Schule respektieren müssen.
alpha.b ist nicht verantwortlich für die Durchführung dieser Richtlinien.

Für die Unterbringung bei Gastfamilien hat alpha.b ein Protokoll erstellt welches von unseren Gastfamilien zur Kenntiniss genommen wurde :

  • Reduzierte Anzahl an Gastschülern pro Familie
  • Aus Vorsichtsgründen werden nur Einzelzimmer angeboten. Nur für Paare oder Schüler die ge-meinsam reisen ist die Unterbringung in einem Doppelzimmer möglich.
  • Einhalten der sozialen Distanzierung und den Hygienehinweisen
  • Regelmässige Reinigung der Gemeinschaftsbereiche

Wir zählen darauf, dass alle notwendigen Hygienemassnahmen angewendet werden, um sich gegenseitig zu schützen.
alpha.b lehnt jede Verantwortung in Bezug auf Covid-19 bei der Unterbrinung bei Gastfamilien ab.

Das Leben in Nizza

Das Leben in Nizza normalisiert sich wieder.

Restaurants, Bars, Museen, Parks und Strände sind wieder offen.

Die öffentlichen Verkehrsmittel (Strassen- bahn, Bus und Zug) zirkulieren wieder normal. Jedoch herrscht momentan im öffentlichen Verkehr Maskenpflicht.

Auch muss beim Arzt, in Geschäften und auf der Strasse eine Gesichtsmaske getragen werden.

How do we use the relative pronoun “Dont”?

This week, alpha.b French school in Nice is offering the third and final video on the use of pronouns in French, more specifically the relative pronoun “DONT”.

The relative pronoun DONT

Why don’t students like this pronoun very much? Because it doesn’t really have an equivalent in other languages. It is a French speciality.

But in reality it is very simple to use.

A small reminder:

QUI replaces the subject of the verb

QUE replaces the direct object

OÙ replaces a time or a place

The relative pronoun DONT is used with all the verbs which are constructed with an object using the preposition “DE”.

Looking at a clear example:

  1. Les étudiants parlent de football (The students talk about football)

  2. Le football est un sport populaire (Football is a popular sport)

Which are the words that appear twice?

Le football.

We will replace this word in the first sentence.

What is the role of this word in the first sentence?

Is it the subject? No, the subject is “les étudiants”.

Is it the direct object? No.

Is it a time or a place? No, it’s not one of those either.

Look carefully at the word which is before the word “football”. It is the preposition “de”. Therefore we will use the relative pronoun “DONT”.

How do we form this sentence?

Le football, dont les étudiants parlent, est un sport populaire. (Football, which the students talk about, is a popular sport.)

We use the same logic to construct a sentence as with the other pronouns.

Which are the verbs which are constructed with DE? There are many, but we have put together a small selection of the most common for you.

When you use any of these verbs in a sentence and want to replace the DE and the object with a relative pronoun, you must use DONT.

For example:

ÊTRE + adjective + DE

  1. Je suis fou de chocolat (I am crazy about chocolate)

  2. Le chocolat coûte très cher (Chocolate is very expensive)

“Le chocolat, dont je suis fou, coûte très cher.” (Chocolate, which I am crazy about, is very expensive)

D’où viens-tu ?

Je ne sais jamais vraiment comment répondre à cette question : je suis née à Paris, mais ne suis pas parisienne, j’ai grandi dans les Alpes mais ne me sens pas Haut-Alpine. J’habite à Nice depuis 30 ans donc probablement puis-je dire que je suis niçoise.

Comment es-tu arrivé(e) à alpha.b et en quelle année ?

Oh là là, ça fait super longtemps… Il y a 24 ou 25 ans… Au début, je travaillais comme professeure pendant l’été. Ah oui, et j’étais aussi famille d’accueil pour les étudiants d’alphab.

Qu’est-ce que tu fais à alpha.b ?

J’ai un contrat mixte : je suis responsable pédagogique de l’école et je continue à enseigner. Être prof, j’adore ça !

Pourquoi aimes-tu ton travail à alpha.b ?

J’adore la variété de mon travail, j’aime rencontrer des gens différents et enseigner les mystères de la langue française ! Mon truc préféré dans la vie, c’est voyager et, à travers mes étudiants, je voyage tout en restant à Nice : ils me parlent de leur vie, de leur pays, de leur culture et moi, ça me permet m’évader dans ma tête. Et parfois, je vais leur rendre visite chez eux…

Quel est ton meilleur souvenir à alpha.b ?

Difficile d’en choisir un… Mais un de mes coups de cœur a été la rencontre avec les étudiantes d’un groupe venu de la Sorbonne d’Abu Dhabi, l’an dernier. Soudanaises, Palestiniennes, Syriennes et une Belge, elles m’ont communiqué leur énergie et leur joie de vivre pendant les 4 semaines qu’on a partagées.

Quelles langues parles-tu ?

Français (ça c’est logique !), anglais, allemand… Et pendant le confinement, j’ai étudié intensivement l’espagnol, seule sur une plateforme d’apprentissage et avec deux amies qui sont devenues mes professeures privées 😉 Un grand merci à mes deux Maria…

Est-ce que tu as toujours voulu faire ce que tu fais maintenant ?

Je savais que je voulais travailler avec des langues étrangères, mais ce travail, je ne savais même pas que ça existait.

The Alphabet in French – How to Spell Out a Word

This week, Priscilla has returned to our video French lessons online!

She is offering you a new video on pronunciation for beginners, focused on the alphabet in French. And even if you are not a beginner, it is always good to revise your alphabet because often we think we know it, but we are getting certain letters wrong.

You will also learn how to spell out a word.

Here is a transcript of the video, in English:

Hello I am Priscilla, I am a teacher at the language school alpha.b in Nice. I am, by the way, Niçoise by adoption. How do we spell Niçoise? N I Ç O I S E.

You can see that the letters of the French alphabet are not so easy.

Here is a program of two lessons that we will have together about the French alphabet.

Today I will explain to you how to spell out a word, meaning how to pronounce the letters which make up a word. And in our next lesson we will work on the particularities of the French alphabet, pronunciation and otherwise.

In French there are 26 letters.

But I have a little trick to help you both to pronounce the letters, and also to memorise them.

There are 26 letters but only 7 different pronunciations for the letters of the French alphabet.

We will work with a table made up of 7 columns.

At the top of each column, there is a phonetic symbol which represents the sound of a letter or letters.

The columns of letters are pronounced: [a] [e] [ø] [ε] [i] [o] [y]

Shall we begin?

Here is the French alphabet.

Even so, be careful with certain pronunciation problems which always crop up with students.

The sound [ø] which is not pronounced like the [e]

The possible confusion between two letters: the letter G like in Gérard and J like in “jolie” (pretty).

The letters U and Q: be careful they are not pronounced like [u] but like [y]. To have the sound [u] you must always have two letters: O+U

And the favourite of English speakers, speakers of Asian languages, and many nationalities: the R. It is a tough letter in French.

“J’ai visité BeRlin.” (I visited Berlin). Don’t worry about exaggerating it.

Another problem, when you spell out, for example, my first name: I am Priscilla. How is that spelt? P R I S C I, two Ls, A.

Careful, in French we do not say: L L, or double L, we say “deux L” (two Ls), “deux P”, “deux S”, etc.

Lastly, I will explain how to dictate an email address in French.

The French do not use the word “email” in a professional context but the word “courriel” for “courriel électronique” (electronic mail).

They are written in lowercase letters and without accents. If you would like to know everything about accents, I will see you again in another video.

There are two options for the dash:

  • “tiret du haut” – (dash/hyphen)
  • Or “tiret du bas” _ (underscore)

French course and Covid19

As a French student, you might be interested in traveling to Nice this summer or fall and join a class at alpha.b French school.

But you might be concerned by the Covid 19 situation and you would like to know what alpha.b implemented to welcome you in the best condition possible.

The school :

Social distancing will be respected inside the school as well as in the school gardens.

Students will be asked to wear a face mask in all common areas of the school. Important : Students have to bring their own mask.

Hydroalcoholic gel dispensers will be available at the school entrance, in all common areas and in the classrooms.

Our vending machine will be condemned, please bring your own bottle, snacks or thermos.

Classrooms and bathrooms will be disinfected twice a day.

A school supervisor on site has undergone a special «Covid19» training to ensure everyone’s health security.

Course programme :

In order to respect all regulations, we offer the following courses for now:

Classes and schedule :

Depending on classroom size, classes will count between 5 and 10 students.

As we will respect the social distancing during the classes, the teacher and the students won’t have to wear a mask at this stage.

Course and break hours will be deferred to assure a minimum number of people at one time in common areas.

Morning classes will start between 8.30 and 9.30 and be dispatched between our 2 buildings (le Centre and le Forum). They will end between 11.40 and 12.40.
Break time will be reduced to 10 minutes for the morning courses.

Afternoon classes (intensive or private) will start at 13.30, 13.45, 14.00, 14.15 or 14.30. No break time. You will be informed on your App mobile of your schedule 1 day ahead.

We will not provide any pen and paper, nor tablettes or laptop. Please bring your own.

Activity programme :

We will offer a reduced activity programme.

We will offer a large list of activity ideas to do individually or in small groups.

Accommodation in Nice :

Hotels and residences will have to follow a guideline given by French authorities which differentiate from the regulations we have to put in place in our school. alpha.b is not responsible for the good practice of these guidelines.

For host family accommodation, alpha.b set up a protocol the families agreed to respect : – limited number of students in the host family
– no double room accommodation besides for couples or students travelling together
– social distancing and hygiene rules during the shared meals

– regular cleaning of commun areas
We have to rely on both, host families’ and students’ common sense to cohabit in Covid19 times by applying all necessary hygiene mesures to protect each other.

Life in Nice

Life in Nice is coming back to normal.

Restaurants, bars, museums, parc and beaches are newly open.

Public transportation (tramway, bus, train) are back to normal.

At this very moment, people have to wear a face mask in public transport, administrations, at the doctor’s, in shops and in the street.
