Agreement of the Past Participle

You are in the process of learning French in your country, or here in Nice and you will discover the passé compose (the perfect tense).

At first glance it seems like an easy tense, and it more or less is, but I’ll admit except for when it comes to learning by heart all of the irregular past participles.

You thought you understood everything:

– 14 verbs and reflexive verbs are conjugated with the auxiliary ÊTRE

– All of the other verbs are conjugated with the auxiliary AVOIR

And now, we’re announcing a new rule:

– 6 verbs are conjugated with ÊTRE AND with AVOIR: sortir, passer, monter, descendre, retourner and rentrer. You must know if the verb is followed by a direct object or not.

For example:

Je suis sorti hier soir – J’ai sorti le chien
Je suis passé chez toi – J’ai passé de bonnes vacances
Je suis monté à pied – J’ai monté les bagages

Is that clearer?

Ok, so now we are moving on to agreement. The most painful part!

The rule is simple (to begin with) -> when we use the auxiliary être, we agree the past participle with the subject.

But there’s a twist, of course we don’t agree the past participle with the subject when we use the auxiliary avoir but… we DO agree it with the direct object if it is paced before the verb.
