My First Day at Alpha-B French Language School – By Georges

Straight away when I arrived at Alpha-B French Language School in Nice, it was interesting to hear all of the different French accents of the students who were in the school whose ages ranged from 8 to over 50. Japanese, German, Spanish, Russian, English and many more. Throught the day, the different tongues all began to become clearer and clearer which made it much easier to converse with the other students.

For the first session in the classroom, we undertook a test in order to determine which groups we would be placed in for the week of french class. This included a short written piece of work on an ideal holiday location or the problems concerning social relations beween people and why or why not new technologies such as social media have changed the way we interact with each other. This was followed by a short oral discussion with a teacher and another student and a comprehension which tested grammar knowledge and nuances of the french language. After a short break, we returned to the classroom to play a game in which we asked each other questions on French culture and famous French figures and this sparked friendly rivalry amongst the four teams.

Having had lunch, Patrice and I took a group of students of all ages on a tour around Nice which allowed us to see some of the most special and breathtaking sites that the city has to offer.

We started off by walking down the Avenue Jean Medecin and we felt the vibrant atmosphere of the city as it was full of people ; tourists taking advantages of the shopping opportunities and the locals going about their daily business.

We then reached the Fontaine du Soleil and in the middle of the splashing water the is a magnificent statue of the Greek god, Apollo, surrounded by Gaia, Mercury, Mars, Saturn and Venus cast in bronze.

We then proceeded through an antiquity market which lead us to the sea front and what a sight to behold.

The deep blue sea gleamed in the sun with a mulitude of people relaxing and sun-bathing on the beach trying to capture the final rays of the summer sun.

Following on, we diverted through the narrow streets of the old town of Nice which housed many traditional sweet and clothing shops and the aroma of the Nicoise food stools filled the air and everyone got an authentic taste of real French food.

We finished the day by visiting the world famous Fenocchio ice cream shop and they had any flavour that you could imagine with a never-ending selection of flavours such as chocolate and vanilla to more adult flavours such as mohito and pina colada to the ridiculous such as cactus (which actually tasted surprisingly delicious) !

Overall, it was an enjoyable trip because we saw some beautiful Niçoise locations and everybody enjoyed getting to know the background of each person in our mulicultural group whilst practicing to speak French.
